Acute and chronic lung diseases are one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality world wide. If heart-lung transplant is needed, patients rarely survive. If molecular mechanisms leading to lung regeneration were known, or drug targets were more easily identified in human lung tissue and lung disease models, less invasive therapies could be developed. In the model physiological interactions, surfactant production, drug transport via specific transporters, regeneration processes can all be investigated. The role of the innate immune system in lung parenchyma damage can also be studied.
